Maize gluten containing a substantial quantity of starch is treated with an acid and with formaldehyde in quantity sufficient to plasticize both protein and starch, and to make the starch insoluble on curing. The curing may be effected by heating. The protein-starch mixture may be pre-treated to gelatinize, modify or dextrinize the starch. The products may be moulded and cured, if desired with the addition of fillers such as wood flour, or may be used as adhesives for wood, paper, or other materials.
