An apparatus 22 comprising at least one serial communication interface 38 that is configured by selecting from a variety of input and output protocols that are accessed from a memory location 24. The apparatus has an input port that may be associated with any stored input protocol and an output port that may associated with any stored output protocol. The protocol selected may be derived automatically from the input signal or selected from a predetermined memory location. Optionally, the output protocol may be selected to differ from the input protocol. The apparatus may be avionic equipment such as a health management, flight management or flight data recording system. The plurality of protocols may include RS-422, RS-485 and ARINC-717. |
