The purpose of the present invention is to provide a diesel engine that can be smoothly started even in a situation where a plunger has become difficult to rotate due to sticking of the plunger that is caused by a fuel film formed on the outer periphery of the plunger. When a key switch 80 is operated from an off-position to an on-position, a control unit 70 of this diesel engine 1 controls an actuator 48 so as to cause a rack 45 to perform a predetermined operation X. If the rack 45 cannot complete the predetermined operation X within a predetermined amount of time Ta, on condition that the key switch 80 is held at a start-position, the control unit controls a starter 60 so as to cause a plunger 34 to perform a preparatory stroke operation whereby the plunger 34 is caused to perform a stroke operation, and the stroke operation by the plunger 34 is stopped before the diesel engine 1 starts.
