<PICT:0616310/III/1> <PICT:0616310/III/2> <PICT:0616310/III/3> A process of discharging a catalyst mass from containers of catalytic apparatus for contacting gases with solids wherein said containers are mounted one above the other, consists in disengaging from the main framework of the container the members supporting the floor or floors thereof, thus facilitating the detachment en masse of the catalyst from the body of the container. In one construction, the container comprises a cylindrical inner wall 1, providing a central gas way and an outer polygonal wall 2, the walls being connected at their upper edges by major beams 4 and secondary beams 5. To load the container, slings 6 are removably suspended from beams 4 and triangular frames 10 fitted with timber grids 11 are placed around the central tube to form a complete floor, being supported on brackets 7 attached to the slings 6. The catalyst is filled to the desired level and the upper floor completed in like manner. Bolts 14 are tightened to tension the outer wall of the container, which is then lifted into position in the contact vessel. When renewal of the catalyst is required, the container is lifted out and placed on the discharging floor, the pins supporting slings 6 removed and the bolts 14 loosened, when the container shell may be lifted clear, leaving the whole mass with the frames 10 on the ground. Each frame is now lifted from one end by the pin 12, when the spent catalyst falls off and the cycle may be repeated with fresh material.
