The method involves dividing exhaust gas in a combustion chamber. A part (20) of the exhaust gas is emerged as an inner exhaust gas recirculation from the chamber of a diesel engine (1) over an outlet valve (21) into an exhaust gas tract (14) and returned again over the outlet valve from the exhaust gas tract into the chamber. The part and other parts (22, 23) of the exhaust gas are provided to form residue exhaust gas (19) in the chamber for a combustion cycle. The residue exhaust gas and/or a ratio between the parts of the exhaust gas are adjusted in the chamber. An independent claim is also included for an internal combustion engine for executing a method for reduction of nitrogen oxide emission in a diesel engine.
