A centrifugal compressor apparatus includes: an impeller 38 mounted for rotation about a central longitudinal axis, the impeller including an impeller disk 44 carrying an array of impeller blades 66 around its periphery; a diffuser 74 disposed downstream of the impeller 38, configured to diffuse and turn airflow discharged from the impeller; an extraction scoop 130 disposed in fluid communication with the impeller 38 and with a plenum disposed adjacent the impeller, and a dirt collector 138 disposed in fluid communication with the plenum and configured to trap dirt therein.
