The present invention relates to a method for setting a status of an Internet of things (IoT) device by using an earphone terminal of a user terminal, and to an apparatus for controlling the IoT device. According to one embodiment of the present invention, the apparatus for controlling an IoT device comprises: a storage unit having information of the IoT device stored therein; a conversion unit for converting the stored information of the IoT device to an analog signal; a communications unit for transmitting the converted information of the IoT device to a user terminal through an earphone terminal of the user terminal, and receiving setting information with respect to the IoT device inputted by a user to correspond to the transmitted information of the IoT device from the user terminal; and a control unit for setting a status of the IoT device by using the converted setting information when the received setting information with respect to the IoT device is converted to a digital signal in the conversion unit. The communications unit is configured to transmit and receive the information of the IoT device and the setting information with respect to the IoT device by using an insertion hole of an earphone jack configured to be connected through an earphone terminal and earphone of the user terminal.
