A method and apparatus for encoding video, where motion estimation (ME) is calculated and compared with a threshold. The value of a metric from a temporal variability of the ME score is calculated and compared with a predetermined value and a high film grain indication signal is provided when the threshold is exceeded and the ME score temporal variability metric is below the predetermined value. The encoder may then allocate less bits to I frames and more bits to P and B type frames than to other frames of the video when a high film grain signal is provided or allocate more bits to I frames when the high film grain indication is not provided. The ME score threshold may be greater than 20. This method is intended to improve video quality when encoding with film grain. |
