A water jacket spacer inserted into a groove-shaped cooling water channel of a cylinder block of an internal combustion engine. The water jacket spacer is characterised by having a body section which has a shape that follows the groove-shaped cooling water channel and further having: an inner wall-side contact member which is for dividing the groove-shaped cooling water channel into upper and lower sections at the inner side from the water jacket spacer by being attached to the inner wall side of the body section in the longitudinal direction of the inner wall of the body section and being in contact with a cylinder bore-side wall surface of the groove-shaped cooling water channel; and/or an outer wall-side contact member which is for dividing the groove-shaped cooling water channel into upper and lower sections at the outer side from the water jacket spacer by being attached to the outer wall side of the body section in the longitudinal direction of the outer wall of the body section and being in contact with the outer-side wall surface of the groove-shaped cooling water channel. With the present invention, it is possible to provide an internal combustion engine having a highly uniform cylinder bore wall temperature.
