A process for producing a polycarbonate, the process comprising a step (a) in which a phosgenation reaction is conducted to obtain a liquid reaction mixture, a step (b) in which a liquid reaction mixture containing a polycarbonate oligomer is obtained, a step (c) in which the liquid reaction mixture is separated into an organic-solvent phase containing the polycarbonate oligomer and an aqueous phase, and a step (d) in which the organic-solvent phase containing the polycarbonate oligomer, an aqueous alkaline solution of a dihydric phenol, and a chain terminator are reacted to obtain a liquid reaction mixture containing a polycarbonate, during which the liquid reaction mixture containing a polycarbonate is switched from a liquid reaction mixture containing an unbranched polycarbonate to a liquid reaction mixture containing a branched polycarbonate or switched from a liquid reaction mixture containing a branched polycarbonate to a liquid reaction mixture containing an unbranched polycarbonate, wherein the amount of the chain terminator to be introduced into the step (d) is increased or reduced in a plurality of stages. |
