The invention envisages a space for positioning identical panels on a surface. The spacer comprises a base section for the positioning of the spacer on a first panel, a first contact surface for positioning the spacer relative to the first panel in the longitudinal direction, and a second contact surface for positioning the spacer relative to a second panel. The first contact surface and the second contact surface are configured so that in use the first contact surface and the second contact surface determine the distance between the first panel and the second panel after installation. In addition, at least one of the first contact surface and the second contact surface is configured to be removed from its initial position after installation so that the first panel and the second panel can move relative to each other after removal of the first contact surface or the second contact surface.
