PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that can reduce its size without sacrificing an increase in luminance and size of a screen.SOLUTION: The present image forming apparatus comprises an optical scanner that two-dimensionally deflects a light beam emitted from a light source element and forms a two-dimensional image on a scanning target surface having transparency, and a projection optical system that enlarges and projects the two-dimensional image on a projection target surface. The projection target surface is a reflection surface of a semi-transmissive mirror that is externally provided to transmit a part of visible light and reflects a part thereof; the scanning target surface is a diffuser panel that diffuses incident light on its travel direction; the cross-sectional shape of the light diffused on the diffuser panel is oval.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 7
