PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a sublimation type thermal transfer sheet capable of suppressing the occurrence of kickback or scumming without a specific limitation to a coloring material contained in a coloring material layer; and to provide a coating liquid for a coloring material layer used in the production method.SOLUTION: In a coating liquid for a coloring material layer for forming a coloring material layer 2 of a sublimation type thermal transfer sheet 100, the coating liquid for the coloring material layer contains a predetermined solvent, a coloring material 10X dispersible in the predetermined solvent, a dispersant, and (i) a polyvinyl acetal resin having a number average molecular weight (Mn) of 40,000 or less or (ii) a nitrocellulose resin of L1/8 or less or H1/8 or less by type and viscosity symbols according to JISK6703 (1995).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
