PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protection device for a cutter and associated items capable of stopping the cutter even when cutting objects of various height.SOLUTION: A protection method for a cutter comprises: irradiating from laser beam irradiation means (5) a linear laser beam L to a position (13) in a cutter 10 where an object to be cut (P) is placed; capturing an image imaged by imaging means (7) from a direction different from an irradiation direction of the laser irradiation means (S3); extracting a portion of the laser beam from the captured image; analyzing a property of a line in the extracted laser beam (S4 to S6); and stopping an operation of the cutter according to a result of the analysis (S5, S7).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
