Provided is a respiratory status estimation apparatus provided with: a pulse wave signal acquisition unit for acquiring a pulse wave signal from a site on a living body; a pulse rate calculation unit for calculating the pulse rate of the living body on the basis of the pulse wave signal; and a respiratory status estimation unit for estimating a respiratory status of the living body on the basis of the pulse rate. Also provided is a respiratory status estimation method comprising: optically acquiring a pulse wave signal from a site on a living body; calculating the pulse rate of the living body, on the basis of the pulse wave signal; and estimating a respiratory status of the living body, from the pulse rate.
