Provided is an illumination device in which a light source used for an illumination function and an optical unit used for a video projection function are more suitably arranged. This illumination device for emitting illumination light is provided with: a light source which is arranged inside a housing, and which is for generating the illumination light; a diffusion plate which is attached to one part of the housing, and which diffuses the illumination light from the light source; and a projector which is arranged inside a space formed by the housing and one part of the diffusion plate, and which projects video onto a projection surface. An optical unit, which forms the projector, is arranged either in: a state in which the direction of incidence of a light beam from a display element of the projector and incident on a projection optical system of the projector becomes a direction substantially parallel to the horizontal plane, or a direction nearer to the direction parallel to the horizontal plane than the vertical direction; or a state in which the optical axis of the projection optical system on which the light beam from the display element of the projector is incident becomes a direction substantially parallel to the horizontal plane, or a direction nearer to the direction parallel to the horizontal plane than the vertical direction. |
