Materials containing gallium and aluminium are dissolved in caustic soda and the greater part of the alumina precipitated therefrom. The remaining solution is treated with an acid, preferably carbon dioxide to precipitate the remainder of the alumina which is much enriched in gallium oxide. The starting material is preferably recycled aluminate liquors from the Bayer process of obtaining alumina from bauxite or from the anode of aluminium refining cells. The gallium oxide-containing alumina may be redissolved in caustic soda and the process repeated. The product may be further enriched by treatment with an acid which dissolves out more alumina and may finally be treated to produce pure gallium oxide by known methods, e.g. by dissolving in hydrochloric acid and extraction from the solution by ether.
|
