A method of preventing infection of a hymenopterous insect of the superfamily Apoidea or preventing infection of a bee by a virulent virus variant, such as type A deformed wing virus (DWV) comprising the application of an avirulent virus form thereto. The avirulent virus may be type B DWV or type C DWV.
