PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter in which magnetic attraction force of an electromagnetic device can be increased and the device can be made compact as a whole.SOLUTION: The starter includes an electromagnetic device 9 for applying pressing force toward a ring gear 23 to a pinion gear mechanism 70. The electromagnetic device 9 includes: an exciting coil 24 disposed in a cylindrical shape; a plunger holder 26 disposed at the pinion gear mechanism 70 side of the exciting coil 24, for holding the exciting coil 24; and a switch plunger 27 which is attracted by the magnetic force generated by energization of the exciting coil 24, slides in an axial direction in the exciting coil 24, and applies pressing force to the pinion gear mechanism 70. The plunger holder 26 has a holder cylindrical part 26b that faces inside the exciting coil 24; and the switch plunger 27 is formed in such a manner that while the switch plunger is attracted by the magnetic force of the exciting coil 24, the top end of the plunger laps over the holder cylindrical part 26b in a radial direction. |
