摘要 A composite catalyst for synthesizing organic compounds comprises a hydrogenating compound of thoria and at least one of the metals of Group VIII of the Periodic System and an isomerizing and cracking component of a major proportion of silica and a minor proportion of alumina and/or zirconia. The two components may be made separately and then combined or the isomerizing component may be made first and the other component precipitated thereon, or the reaction tube may contain alternate layers of each component. The hydrogenating component is prepared by precipitation of the hydroxides calcined above 400 DEG C. to the oxide and then reduced in hydrogen above 200 DEG C. Minor amounts of copper and/or the oxides of manganese and aluminium may be added. In hydrocarbon synthesis the reaction temperature is between 175-300 DEG C. The catalyst is reactivated by removing wax with solvents and by burning off carbon deposits with air.ALSO:Fisher-Tropsch synthesis is effected at 175 DEG to 300 DEG C. by passing a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen over a catalyst of thoria and at least one of the metals of Group VIII of the Periodic System, together with an additional component comprising a major proportion of silica and a minor proportion of alumina and/or zirconia.
