A strainer separator, Fig. 1, having a perforated conical wall 1, discharges separated solids continuously through ports 8 in the floor. The discharge may be controlled by rollers 10 having ridged or toothed surfaces and rotated at a controlled speed by a separate drive, or, by gears from a sleeve 13 driven through a governor-controlled friction clutch 11. The discharge may be controlled by flap valves 23, Fig. 6, which are positioned by an axially-adjustable ring 27. Or, the valves may be opened, in turn, once in each revolution of the separator, by contact with an adjustable stationary trip piece. The rollers 10 may be perforated as shown in Fig. 5 and, in that case, the conical wall may have no perforations. The perforations in the rollers may be provided by a wire gauze envelope. The rollers may be washed by, or the material therein treated with, a liquid introduced by a pipe 46. The materials may be carried round in the strainer by ribs 34, Fig. 1. In a modification, the separator is cruciform in crosssection and the materials are distributed on entry by positively-rotated axially-directed rollers at the re-entrant corners. |
