A disk drive slider supports a microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) write head (29b, fig.2a) with a spin-torque oscillator (STO) 175 and a separate corrosion monitor (CM) 300. The CM includes a corrosion detection layer formed of the same electrically conductive material as the STO's spacer layer. The CM may be coplanar with the STO but laterally spaced from the STO. The corrosion detection layer has an edge at the air bearing surface (ABS) so as to be exposed to the same atmospheric conditions as the STO's spacer layer. Electrical leads 302, 304 are located at each end of the CM and are connected to pads 306, 308 on the upper surface of the slider possibly by vias 307, 309. Electrical resistance of the CM is measured by detection of current in the plane 310 of the corrosion detection layer. The CM may be made of copper or copper alloy and may include ferromagnetic reference and field generation layers. |
