A two-stroke engine comprising a cylinder 1, and a piston 2, the crown of the piston forming one side of a combustion chamber 3 and the piston 2 having a first end 4 adjacent the combustion chamber 3 and a second opposite end 5. A space 6 is defined between the first and second ends 4 and 5, and the space 6 is divided, by a separator 7, into first and second sections 8 and 9 respectively, wherein reciprocation of the piston varies the volume of the combustion chamber, and the volumes of the first and second sections. The separator has a passage 10 for communication of the first and second sections. Flow through the passage10 is controlled by a valve 11 so that the engine can avoid a sub-pressure formed under the piston crown, with the valve also therefore controls the load of the engine. The piston may also be a double acting piston with a combustion chamber at each end (fig.8). |
