A method of modulating the activity of adrenomedullin in a subject in need of prevention or reduction of organ dysfunction or prevention of organ failure comprising administering an anti-adrenomedullin (ADM) antibody or an anti-ADM antibody fragment wherein said antibody or antibody fragment binds to a region of at least 4 amino acids within the sequence of aa 1-42 of mature human ADM: YRQSMNNFQGLRSFGCRFGTCTVQKLAHQIYQFTDKDKDNVA (SEQ ID NO. 24), and wherein said antibody or fragment does not bind to the C-terminal portion of ADM (aa 43-52 or ADM (SEQ ID NO:25). |
