Storage resources, such as disc drives, are allocated to storage pools. Each pool contains different tiers of storage devices with different performance characteristics. A gap analysis is performed on each tier of each pool to determine if it has excess capacity or excess demand. The effect of switching storage resources from a tier of one pool to the same tier of another pool is modeled. If the modeling determines an improved arrangement of storage resources, the resources are switched accordingly. The resources may be switched if the improvement is greater than a threshold. The analysis may be performed periodically. In this case, the resources are only switched if the repeated analyses show an improvement. |
