LUBRICATING COMPOSITION CONTAINING AN ANTIWEAR AGENT

The invention provides a lubricating composition containing (a) an oil of lubricating viscosity, (b) a phosphite having at least one hydrocarbyl group that has 4 or more carbon atoms, and (c) a compound derived from a hydroxy-carboxylic acid. The invention further relates to the use of the lubricating composition in an internal combustion engine.

1. A lubricating composition comprising
(a) an oil of lubricating viscosity, (b) 0.1 wt % to 1.5 wt % of a phosphite having at least one hydrocarbyl group that has 4 or more carbon atoms, wherein the phosphite having at least one hydrocarbyl group with 4 or more is represented by the formula:wherein at least one of R3, R4 and R5 is a hydrocarbyl group containing at least 4 carbon atoms and the other may be hydrogen or a hydrocarbyl group, and wherein the phosphite has at least one hydrocarbyl group with 12 to 22 carbon atoms, and
(c) 0.1 wt % to 1.5 wt % of a compound derived from an ester of a hydroxy-carboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of glycolic acid, malic acid, citric acid, or mixtures thereof; and (d) an overbased magnesium sulphonate detergent having a TBN of from 250 to 600 present in an amount from about 0.2 wt % to about 8 wt %.
