578,534. Variable-pitch propellers. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., and HATCHER, E. C May 30, 1944, No. 10371. [Class 114] The propeller blade roots have geared segments engaging sliding racks moved axially by the sleeve g, the forward end of which is attached to a screw-threaded sleeve r. This sleeve is rotated when pitch change is required by the bevel wheel p engaging the gear-wheel u, the wheel p being withdrawn from engagement when running with constant pitch. To facilitate re-engagement the sleeve s is braked by the brake shoes z closed by springs 4 and opened by the wedge 5. A pitch indicator is operated by the rod 10 from the collar g3. Lubrication of the pitch-changing mechanism is provided by seawater entering the housing k<1> at its forward end and proceeding along the shaft surface by helical grooves 14 in a liner 13 of synthetic plastic material.. In a modification, the seawater can be pump circulated. |
