A hybrid powertrain system for a vehicle (5 see fig 5) includes a hybrid powertrain motor-generator (140 see fig 5) which communicates with a mechanical flywheel unit (7 see fig 5), a vehicle battery or chemical/electrical energy store (15 see fig 5) and a control system (13 see fig 5) via a communication/energy pathway (9 see fig 5). The engine 10 is directly fastened to a ladder chassis 71 at mounts 77, 79 as is a gearbox 30 at mount 81. The invention allows a vehicle to be reversibly converted using a hybrid drive unit 100 and two drive shafts 52,55. The original propeller shaft (50 see fig 1) is replaced by two shorter drive shafts 52,55 with two original Hookes joints or constant velocity joints 60 being retained. The invention is usable for a passenger service vehicle such as a bus. |
