637,137. Extrusion moulding-machines. PIRELLI GENERAL CABLE WORKS, Ltd., and HORLEY, R. E. G. Nov. 3, 1947, No. 29259. [Class 87 (ii)] In an extrusion moulding machine in which a filter or screen is provided through which the moulding material passes before reaching the die, means are provided whereby the filter may be withdrawn and replaced when necessary without dismantling or stopping the machine. In the wire coating machine shown material in the barrel 8 is fed by the screw 9 through an opening 7 in the head 1 to an annular space 6 surrounding a central tube 2 in the head through which the wire 3 to be coated passes to the die 4. The material is guided to the die by a shoe or deflector 10. Between a flange 11 on the barrel 8 and a machined surface on the head 1 is a block 12 having a bore 13 of the same size as and in line with the opening 7 and barrel 8, and a slot 14 extending right through the block from side to side of the barrel 8. Into the slot 14 is inserted a filter 15 comprising a perforated plate with upturned edges to fit closely in the slot 14. In the space formed by the upturned edges is fitted a square plate with a hole the same diameter as the bore 13 so that the passage through the filter will correspond with the opening and barrel 8. To replace a used filter a clean one is inserted in the slot 14 and used to push the used one out of the machine. A screw device 18, 19 may be provided to facilitate this.
