摘要 640,649. Making pipe fittings. NORTHERN INDIANA BRASS CO. July 1, 1947, No. 17291. Convention date, Sept. 19, 1944. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] @, extruding.-Wrought metal pipe fittings are made from heated tubular blanks by inserting a stepped mandrel into a die arranged so that one end of the blank is enlarged by upsetting and the other end is extruded to a smaller diameter. In making an adaptor a red-hot tubular blank 8, Fig. 1, which may be cut from drawn tubing is inserted into a die 9 which has a stepped bore comprising two cylindrical portions 10, 11 and a hexagonal portion 13, the blank having a diameter substantially the same as the portion 10 so that it rests on the conical shoulder 12 of the die. The mandrel 14, correspondingly stepped to form the inner faces of the adaptor and having a hexagonal portion 17 which is a sliding fit in the portion 13 is forced into the die, the metal trapped between the faces of the die and mandrel being upset to form the hexagonal portion 5, Fig. 2, and the intermediate cylindrical portion 15 of the adaptor and excess metal being extruded between the smaller diameter portions 11, 16 of the die and mandrel to form the nipple portion 3. The finished article is removed by the ejector 19. Metals and alloys such as brass, copper, that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Monel," nickel steel and stainless steel may be used and are generally heated to " red heat." Working at specifed temperatures.-The working temperature for brass is specified as 1100‹ F.
