A power transformer has fault current limiting capability. A magnetic core within the power transformer has input AC windings and output AC windings. A DC current source is connected to the magnetic core via a DC winding between the input AC windings and output AC windings. The DC current source is activated in response to a fault current to create a virtual air gap within the magnetic core. When the fault is cleared, the DC current source is deactivated to remove the virtual air gap. |
