ADS-B (Mode S) and ACARS aircraft position information is received at different rates, over a digital data link, from aircraft via ground stations. The apparatus also receives electronic geographical map data. A processor matches the position data for a given aircraft, filters the quantity of aircraft position information to prevent system overload (it limits the amount of information per aircraft per unit time; erroneous or less accurate information is removed preferentially) and smoothes the filtered information which is then overlaid on to the map data. Alternatively, position and both current and future weather data are received; future aircraft trajectories are extrapolated, or interpolated using flight plan data, and superimposed on the weather data map. |
