621,001. Mercury and other conducting- liquid switches. FKG F. KESSELRING GERATEBAU AKT.-GES. Feb. 7, 1947, No. 3748. Convention date, Feb. 19, 1946. [Class 38(v)] A switch comprises two chambers containing a conducting medium 8 and separated by a partition having at least one current path, so that predetermined currents can flow continuously between the chambers, without variation, but an over-load produces a reduction in or interruption of, the passage of current, due to greater current concentration at one point of the path. The conducting medium may be mercury, or fused salts, or, with A.C., sulphuric acid or soda lye. The partition may be of insulating or conducting material, such as aluminium or carbon, and may be partly hygroscopic, being moistened by wick action with, e.g., water. The insulating partition may (a) be formed with holes filled with the same or a different conducting medium, or (b) contain pins, grains, and the like, which are flush with or project from one or both sides of the partition. The conducting partition 11 may (a) be covered with, e.g., enamel 12, Fig. 5, scratches in the enamel being made to expose the partition in places, or (b) contain pins 5 of good or bad conductivity, Fig. 2. The current may be reduced or interrupted by several means, viz. (a) gases or vapours from the conducting medium, pins or partition &c. due to heating, (b) liberation of gases dissolved in the medium, (c) evaporation of the liquid absorbed in a hygroscopic partition, or (d) the formation of non-conductive coatings, e.g., aluminium oxide, on a conducting partition. The partition may be formed as a double wall, Fig. 6, the intermediate space 15 serving as a buffer to take up pressure impulses and the partitions may be shunted by resistors and condensers 14. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that the conducting medium may be fine powder, e.g., metal or carbon. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
