A motor vehicle 1 comprises an internal combustion engine 3 which is turned on and off by an ignition switch 7 which is operated by a driver of the motor vehicle 1, the switch 7 having a first off state which does not allow the engine 3 to run and a second on state which allows the engine 3 to run. The vehicle 1 further comprises control unit 5 that controls an indicator 9 which alerts the driver that the state of the switch 7 should be changed from the second on state to the first off state if the vehicle 1 remains stationary for a predetermined period of time, e.g. three minutes, with the switch 7 in the second on state. This encourages the driver to save fuel, reduce exhaust emissions and reduce wear and tear on the engine 3. The control unit 5 may automatically stop the engine 3 when it determines that there is an opportunity to save fuel and reduce exhaust emissions and it may restart the engine 3 when it determines that the driver is ready. |
