PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head-up display device and a liquid crystal display device capable of ensuring visibility of a display image while suppressing power consumption.SOLUTION: The head-up display device includes a liquid crystal display device having a liquid crystal panel 1a that is illuminated with illumination light from a light source. The liquid crystal panel 1a includes a display side polarizing plate 22 and a reflective polarizing plate 21 opposing to each other to interpose a liquid crystal cell 10, and a light-shielding part 30, in which a segment forming region T is switched into one of a transmissive state and a non-transmissive state responding to an applied voltage. The light-shielding part 30 is formed to overlap an outer edge of the segment forming region T in a normal direction of the substrate, and is recognized as an edge enclosing the segment in a display image. When the segment forming region T is in a transmissive state, the segment is lit by illumination light while the segment forming region T and the background region B in a non-transmissive state are displayed in a reflection mode by the reflection of external light on the reflective polarizing plate 21.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 3 |
