This invention concerns a system (10) for assisting an individual in attaining a standing position. The system (10) includes a first sub-system which has a seat (14) on which a user may, in use, sit. The seat (14) is movable between a first, seated position and a second, raised position. The system further includes a second sub-system which has a powered orthosis (26) for attachment to a person's leg in use. The orthosis (26) has a lower portion (28) and an upper portion (30) which are movable relative to one another between a first, collapsed position and a second, extended position. A control system is provided for controlling the movement of the seat (14) and the orthosis (26) between their first and second positions respectively. In use, movement of the seat (14) from its seated to its raised position elevates the user to a predetermined, partially standing position and movement of the orthosis (26) from its collapsed to its extended position raises the user into a final, standing position. The invention also concerns a method of assisting an individual in attaining a standing position. |
