摘要 541,729. Knitting-machines ; photo-electric apparatus. STANLEY, W. E., and EDWARDS, C. H. June 7, 1940, No. 9953. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group VIII] The fabric knitted in a knitting machine is examined photo-electrically for transparency or reflecting power between the knitting needles and the take-up rolls, whereby any irregularity gives a signal or automatically stops the machine. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a mirror 9 is placed below the fabric 6 between the needles 1 and the take-up rolls 7, and a photo-electric cell 32 and a lamp 31 are supported above the fabric 6 by a carriage 29 slidably mounted on a slidable rod 28. The carriage 29 engages a part nut with a screw shaft 10 to which is splined a clutch member 26 adapted to be clutched alternately with opposite bevel wheels 22, 23 in mesh with a bevel pinion 21 on a shaft 20 driven through bevel gearing 19, 18 and belt gearing 16, 17, 15 by the hand-wheel 14 of the machine. The clutch member 26 is controlled by a fork 27 on the rod 28 in conjunction with end stops 34 also on the rod 28, as follows. While the clutch 26 is engaged with one of the two wheels 22, 23, the carriage 29 is driven in one direction across the fabric 6. On reaching the end of its stroke, the carriage abuts the stop 34 at that end and causes the rod 28 to slide and the clutch 26 to be engaged with the other of the two wheels, whereby the rotation of the screw shaft 10 is reversed and the carriage driven back across the fabric. The light reaches the photo-electric cell through a slit disposed lengthways of the fabric and long enough to ensure that each part of the fabric shall be tested twice. The photo-electric cell is connected to an amplifier adapted to give a signal or operate a stopping device if the increase or decrease of illumination on the cell is abnormal. The sensitivity may be varied by adjustment of the circuit or of the width of the slit. In a modification the photo-electric cell is situated just below the fabric exposed to general illumination above, and the cell is on a carriage guided on rails and reciprocated by alternate attachment to the opposite sides of an endless chain.
