The present invention relates to a mobile terminal and a method for controlling the same, which control an alarm period of an application so that the application wakes up to perform synchronization with a server, thereby enabling current consumption to decrease. According to an aspect of the present invention, a mobile terminal comprises: memory which stores a plurality of applications waking up and performing synchronization at preset alarm periods; a data scheduler which determines alarm times to wake up the respective applications based on preset conditions, thereby controlling the alarm periods; and an alarm service module which wakes up the applications at the respective alarm times determined by the data scheduler. The alarm service module receives a first signal, requesting a specific alarm to wake up, from a first application among the plurality of applications, and transmits a second signal including information about the specific alarm to the data scheduler in response to the received first signal. When the specific alarm relates to data communication adapted to transmit and receive a packet to and from a server based on the information about the specific alarm, the data scheduler determines an alarm time to wake up the first application and transmits the determined alarm time to the alarm service module.
