Abstract Provided herein are compositions comprising: one or more probiotic microbial strains capable of producing a-hydroxy-isocaproic acid (HICA) in vivo; and a source of fibre and/or a protein or protein-containing component; optionally also comprising a fatty acid transporter; and at least one amino acid. Also provided herein are concentrates for use in preparing a weight loss supplement, comprising: one or more probiotic microbial strains capable of producing a hydroxy-isocaproic acid (HICA) in vivo; and a source of fibre and/or a protein or protein containing component; optionally also comprising a fatty acid transporter; and at least one amino acid, wherein the concentrate is mixed with an aqueous medium prior to use to produce a liquid composition for oral administration.
