The internal combustion engine (1) has a cylinder head (2), a cylinder block (3) and a crankcase (10) that is fastened to the cylinder block, where a mass balancing shaft (20) is mounted in the crankcase. A pin (26) is designed as a dowel pin and is positioned in a region of an end face of the crankcase. The crankcase is disposed in a hole on a straight connecting line between an axis (20a) of the mass balancing shaft and an axis (19a) of a crankshaft (19). The pin is disposed in the crankcase and the hole is disposed in a flange bushing.
