[Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIII] In a washing machine of the kind in which washing fluid is circulated in a vat by a centrifugal impeller situated above an opening in the base of the vat through which fluid is admitted and discharged, the impeller is closed on top and mounted in close proximity to the surface of the vat around the opening, the arrangement being such that when the impeller is rotated it sets up a pressure head around its outer periphery to prevent discharge of the fluid. The provision of a drain valve is thus rendered unnecessary. As shown, an impeller or agitator 22 is mounted on a spindle 20 of an electric motor 18 housed within a sump 14, which depends from a lower portion 10 of the vat of the dish washer. A centrifugal pump 24 having radial blades 32 is mounted immediately under the agitator in such a manner that the bottom edges of the blades 32 have a clearance fit over a conical wall 26 which defines a central drain opening 28 in the sump. The top of the centrifugal pump is closed and passages through which liquid can flow from the vat, when the motor is at rest, are provided through the radial channels formed by the blades 32 and the top of the pump.</p> |
