[Classes 7(v) and 7(vi)] [Also in Group XXIX] The delivery of fuel to a supercharged engine is controlled in accordance with altitude and the temperature and pressure of the admission air, and means are provided to control the richness of the mixture and correct the fuel flow for variations in the volumetric efficiency of the engine. The capsules 25, 23 subject respectively to intake manifold pressure and atmospheric pressure (or exhaust back-pressure) act through a lever 20 and rod 58 to rotate - a lever 62 which actuates a fuel injection pump control rod 31 directly or through a servomotor 51, and a thermometric bulb 59 in the air intake pipe acts through a capsule 71, lever 2 and rod 64 to move a slide block 60 in a slot in the lever 62 to increase the fuel supply as the temperature decreases. The mixture richness is controlled by a cam 7 which rotates a lever 3, pivoted at 4, to vary the position of the pivot 1 of the lever 2. The cam 7 is shaped to correct for varying volumetric efficiency and rotatable through an arm 11 by a rod 18 connected to the throttle valve operating mechanism to vary the richness in accordance with throttle valve opening, independent control of the richness being effected by operation of a rod 15 which rotates an eccentric pivot 9 of the cam 7. The pivot 65 of the lever 62 is also adjusted by the rod 18 which rotates a second cam 10 acting upon a lever 66. The servomotor 51 comprises a valve 56 actuated by the lever 62 and sliding in a bore in a follow-up piston 54, actuated by fluid pressure entering at 52, which piston is connected through a one-way connection 29 to the pump control rod 31. The fuel supply may be cut off by moving a rod 32 to contact the casing 29 and force it to the left against a spring 47. A drum 34 meshing with a rack 33 on the part 29 is normally freely rotatable on the spindle 40 of a lever 39. If the automatic regulating mechanism fails, rotation of the lever 39 causes a cam 43 to move a valve 46 to connect the space 49 to exhaust to allow free movement of the piston 54, and also moves a spring catch 41 to engage a hole 36 to lock the drum 34 to the spindle 40 for manual control of the pump control rod 31, the spring catch 41 being disengaged from the drum 34 by a plate 37 during normal control. Several modifications of the arrangement of the capsules 23, 25 are described, including one in which the two capsules are replaced by a differential capsule.
