The present invention relates to a mobile terminal of which the power is controllable without a power key and a method of controlling the same. The mobile terminal according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a sensing unit for sensing a plurality of taps tapping a display provided to a mobile terminal or a body of the mobile terminal; a power supply unit for supplying power to the sensing unit when the mobile terminal is powered off and configured to sense a pattern formed by the tapping of the taps applied to the mobile terminal body or the display powered off and to allow the mobile terminal to be powered on based on the sensed pattern; and a control unit for connecting the power supply unit and the sensing unit to each other when the mobile terminal is selected to be powered off such that the power is applied from the power supply unit to the sensing unit even when the mobile terminal is powered off.
