Disclosed are a method of detecting a hand gesture by using an optical sensor and an apparatus therefor. According to the present invention, the method comprises: a step of obtaining a plurality of optical signals irradiated on a wrist by using at least one light-receiving sensor and light-emitting sensor arranged on the wrist of a user in parallel; a step of storing the optical signals in a database; a step of calculating a threshold value to determine the hand gesture of the user by using signal levels corresponding to the optical signals; and a step of determining the hand gesture as any one between an open hand and a clenching fist by comparing the threshold value to the signal levels corresponding to the optical signals. The purpose of the present invention is to sense a hand gesture of a user by effectively measuring an optical signal, even when the user freely moves arms.
