1. A shieldable syringe comprising:
a syringe barrel extending between a proximal end and a distal end and defining a chamber therein said chamber configured for receiving a plunger rod therein, said syringe barrel including a locking collar proximate the distal end thereof; a needle cannula in communication with the chamber of the syringe barrel; and a safety shield attached to the syringe barrel, the safety shield comprising:
a first portion having a proximal end and a distal end, the first portion disposed at least partially about the barrel at a location where the chamber is configured to receive the plunger rod, said first portion being axially movable from a retracted position surrounding at least a portion of the syringe barrel to an extended position wherein at least the distal end of the first portion extends beyond the locking collar of the syringe barrel, said first portion including a first locking member for lockingly engaging the locking collar upon axial movement of the first portion to the extended position; anda second portion associated with the first portion, the second portion having a proximal end and a distal end, the second portion being axially movable with respect to the first portion from a retracted position, in which a distal end of the needle cannula extends beyond the distal end of the second portion, to an extended position, in which the distal end of the second portion extends beyond the distal end of the needle cannula and beyond the distal end of the first portion and wherein the first portion and the second portion are concentric about at least one of the syringe barrel and the needle cannula in both their retracted and extended positions. |
