The invention relates to a process for preparing substituted biphenyls of formula Iwherein the substituents have the following meanings: Ris nitro or amino, Ris cyano, halogen, C-C-haloalkyl, C-C-haloalkoxy or C-C-haloalkylthio, n=0 to 3, wherein in case n=2 or 3 Rresidues may have the same or different meanings, Ris hydrogen, cyano or halogen, which comprises reacting a halobenzene of formula IIwherein Hal is chlorine or bromine and Rand Rhave the meanings stated above, in the presence of a base and of a palladium catalyst which consists of palladium and a bidentate phosphorus ligand of formula IIIwherein Ar is phenyl which may comprise from one to three substituents selected from methyl, methoxy, fluoro and chloro, and Rand Rare each independently C-C-alkyl or C-C-cycloalkyl or together form a 2- to 7-membered bridge optionally substituted by one C-C-alkyl substituent, in a solvent, with a phenylboronic acid IVaa diphenylborinic acid IVbor a mixture of IVa and Ivb, wherein Rand n have the meanings stated above. |
