Disclosed are a user terminal to control a display device, and a control method thereof. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the user terminal comprises: a detection unit configured to detect a user or a user interaction; and a control unit configured to change a mode of the user terminal to a second sleep mode in case of an occurrence of a first event which detects a user while the user terminal maintains a first sleep mode, and the mode of the user terminal to a standby mode in case of an occurrence of a second event which detects an intention of the user′s manipulation while the user terminal maintains the second sleep mode. The purpose of the present invention is to provide the user terminal to control a display configured to effectively manage power depending on a surrounding environment, and immediately respond to a user command.
