摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium excellent in abrasion resistance, sliding resistance and corrosion resistance.SOLUTION: A perpendicular magnetic recording medium 31 has a perpendicular magnetic layer 23 and a protective layer 24 which are sequentially laminated on a non-magnetic substrate 20. The perpendicular magnetic layer 23 has a hexagonal closest packing structure and includes layers, on which (0002) crystal faces are oriented in parallel with the surface of the non-magnetic substrate 20, laminated thereon. The top layer of the perpendicular magnetic layer 23 contains polycrystalline grains and the polycrystalline grains contain a CoCr based alloy, a CoPt based alloy, a CoCrPt based alloy or a CoPtCr based alloy. The protective layer 24 is formed while being in contact with the top layer of the perpendicular magnetic layer 23 and includes graphene and/or a laminate of graphene and amorphous carbon. The graphene and/or the laminate of graphene are coupled to individual (0002) crystal faces of polycrystalline grains in parallel.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
