PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To monitor the decomposition reaction of contaminants, such as polychlorinated biphenyls, in an aqueous medium using a microbial catalyst without the direct quantification of the polychlorinated biphenyls which are subjects to be decomposed.SOLUTION: The invention provides a method comprising contacting a contaminant containing polychlorinated biphenyls with a microbial catalyst containing an aromatic ring hydroxylation dioxygenase complex, in an aqueous medium, and measuring the dissolved oxygen concentration in the aqueous medium. The oxygen consumption rate and/or oxygen consumption by the decomposition reaction are calculated from the temporal change of the dissolved oxygen concentration.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 5 |
