PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid falsely determining a maximum value of a focus evaluation value as a peak value while decreasing the number of focus evaluation values which are held.SOLUTION: A focus detection device 106 detects a focus state using a focus evaluation value corresponding to the contrast of an optical image formed by an optical system. The device has: acquisition means of acquiring a first plurality of focus evaluation values one after another within a movement range of a movable element 104 for focusing included in the optical system as the movable element moves; holding means 106a of holding a second plurality of focus evaluation values less than the first number among the focus evaluation values acquired one after another while updating the second number of focus evaluation values; detection means of detecting a maximum value of the focus evaluation values acquired one after another; and processing means of performing peak detection processing for determining whether to detect the maximum value as a peak value corresponding to a focusing state of the optical system using the focus evaluation values held by the holding means according to the detection of the maximum value.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
